French Family Kidnapped in Cameroon by suspected Islamist Terror Group

Armed gunmen kidnapped a French family of 7 that includes four children on Tuesday in Northern Cameroon.

The kidnappers are thought to be from the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram.

The family were said to be visiting the Waza National Park in Northern Cameroon when they were kidnapped.

15 French citizens are now held in the western half of Africa either by Al-Qaeda’s North Africa branch or their allies.

French military intervention in Mali to drive out Al-Qaeda linked extremists is believed to be the cause for the increase in French kidnappings.

French officials deny paying ransoms to release hostages, which is believed to be another reason for the increased kidnap risk in the region.

A warning has been issued for French citizens in the far north of Cameroon to leave the area and advised against travel to the areas bordering Nigeria until further notice.
