An unknown Taliban assassin shot the schoolgirl on her way home from school in the town of Mingora, in the Swat Valley last Tuesday.

Doctors at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham are treating her for her injuries.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital recently opened a major trauma centre sepcialising in gunshot wounds and head injuries.

It had been reported the girl had been shot in the head, a bullet removed from her skull.  She is said to be in a serious condition.

She will require constant security protection from now on as the Taliban have already threatened to target her again.

Once Malala is fit and well the threat to her life will remain and a dedicated Close Protection team will be required to ensure her safety.
