Indian Navy ship foils piracy bid

Mumbai, Jul 19 (PTI) Indian Navy’s warship INS Godavari has successfully foiled an attempt by Somali pirates to hijack a Greek ship in the Gulf of Aden. Responding promptly to a distress call while escorting four ships in the piracy-hit Gulf of Aden early Saturday morning, INS Godavari frustrated the attempt by eight Somali pirates to hijack the Greek vessel MV Elikanos, a Defence Ministry press release said today. INS Godavari launched a helicopter to locate the skiff being used by the pirates. It also launched marine commandos to board the pirate boat.On being approached by the naval boat, the brigands dumped their arms, ammunitions and other piracy triggers.A German naval ship, the Niedersachsen, also coordinated with Godavari in the operation. INS Godavari continued with its escort mission on completion of the operation, the release said.INS Godavari has been deployed in anti-piracy escort operations in the Gulf of Aden since 25 May and has safely escorted 219 ships of various countries.Last week, INS Godavari had escorted a Pakistani ship, MV Islamabad, with an all-Pakistani crew of 38. The Indian Navy has been deploying ships since 2008 in troubled Gulf of Aden for escorting merchant vessels.
