Miss Gillard and her opposition leader Tony Abbot were at an Australia Day awards ceremony in Canberra on Thursday when some protestors started to build up outside the venue.

Apparently there were around 200 protesters said to be supporters of the city’s Aboriginal Tent Embassy that began to beat on the windows of the building that the Prime Minister was in.

Her Police bodyguards made a decision to rush the Prime Minister to safety, as they feared that the glass walls the protesters were banging could collapse.

After 20 minutes Miss Gillard was moved quickly from the building shielded by a CPO with a team of personal security and police officers close behind, to the safety of an awaiting vehicle.

Miss Gillard lost her footing and stumbled during the commotion and her personal protection officer dragged her towards the waiting vehicle and bundled the Prime Minister into the back seat of the car which sped off to safety.

Miss Gillard lost a shoe in the commotion, which the protestors took great delight in displaying to the media and even posted it on EBay for a brief spell before it was removed.

VIP public figures tend to be protected by several bodyguards or a team of close protection officers (CPO’s). It is common for high profile celebrities and CEO’s also use bodyguards.

Update: Since publishing this story Stephen Hester has chosen to reject his bonus.

There has been growing pressure on RBS chief executive Stephen Hester as he is apparently to be awarded around £963,000 in shares as a bonus.

The shares bonus is said to be in payment for his work in contributing towards recovering business at RBS in 2011. The payment apparently to be paid purely in shares, which he would be unable to sell for 2 years.

The RBS Group has recently announced thousands of job cuts adding further salt to the taxpayer’s wound.

The bonus has faced some intense critism in the media and also by many politicians. Chancellor George Osborne said the decision was made by RBS not the Government.

The Royal Bank of Scotland Group (also known as RBS Group) is currently 84% owned by the UK Government (HM Treasury).

Will this cause public uproar and lead to further protests directed at the bank or him personally as suffered by his predecessor.

Sir Fred Goodwin was subjected to attacks to his personal home back in 2009 following his departure from the bank. Public anger about the size of pension he was awarded in his settlement package resulted in his Edinburgh home being attacked and his car vandalized.

The ex RBS boss had a team of close protection officers looking after his family and his personal protection as public anger was vented against him.

Close protection officers are experienced in executive protection providing 24 hour around the clock peace of mind.

Former RBS chief Executive Sir Fred Goodwin has also recently hit the press as potentially being stripped of his knighthood. Sir Fred has been referred to the honours forfeiture committee who will make the final decision.

Since the UK bid was successfully chosen, it was the beginning of the UK’s largest security test. The Olympic village opens on the 13th July and finishes when the Paralympics village closes in September.

The London Olympic Stadium situated at Marshgate Lane, Stratford will be the centre of both the Olympics and the Paralympics. The stadium capacity is 80,000 making it the largest stadium in the UK behind both Wembley and Twickenham Stadium.

There are many existing venues that have been utlisied for the Games, which include Earls Court, Excel Centre, Lords Cricket Ground, The O2 Arena, Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Wembley Stadium and Wimbledon all England Club.

Both the Olympic and Paralympics Games will see 14,700 athletes from 205 countries who will be competing in London and the UK.

During the Games events such as Wimbledon, Notting Hill Carnival and the Queens Diamond Jubilee will also be taking place further stretching security requirements.

London will become the first city to officially host the modern Olympic games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and 1948.

The Ministry Of Defence (MOD) announced last month that 13500 military personnel would be on duty during the Games to support 10,000 police who will lead on the security of the Games.

It has been estimated that around 5000 troops will support the police, with up to 7500 providing venue security. Around 25,000 security staff will be employed during the games to ensure all attending enjoys successful safe event.

Further to the countries bid to demonstrate force the Royal Marines 539 Assault Squadron and Metropolitan Police took part in a joint exercise called Operation Woolwich Arsenal Pier on the 19th January.

The two teams presented a show of strength and force on the River Thames as part of a security exercise in preparation for the Olympics. 539 Assault Squadron will provide waterborne assistance on the Thames during the games.

The operation was designed to establish that the UK is fully poised against a potential terrorist attack.

Typhoon jets and HMS Ocean, the largest ship in the Royal Navy’s fleet, will eventually be deployed to safeguard the Games. There have been further reports that euro fighter jets and surface to air missiles will also be deployed as part of the Olympics security operation.

It is thought that the servicemen and women would cover and protect 150 venues and training sites throughout the UK.

The actual costs for hosting the Games is reported to be in the region of £2 billion, funded in a combination of sponsorship, merchandising, ticketing and broadcasting rights.

The cost of security has also increased from £282m to £553m making it the biggest security operation Britain has faced for decades.

More than 380,000 athletes, officials, workers and media have already started to have rigorous checks on their backgrounds. This process is being undertaken by the Home Office and includes immigration, criminal record and security checks. This is all to help ensure the security of the Games. Any individual could be refused if they present any safety of security risk.

Approximately eight million tickets will be sold for the Olympic games with another 2 million for the Paralympics Games.

G4S (formerly Group 4 Securicor) was appointed official provider of security for the Games. They launch their recruitment centre this week to start searching for thousands of people to employ to assist securing the Olympic venues.

Many private security companies will provide VIP Close Protection for high profile guests and celebrities with Police Royalty Protection officers looking after members of the Royal Family.

President Barrack Obama will be attending with his cavalcade of secret service agents and his distinct bulletproof limousine.

A group of Occupy London protestors took over Roman House, a disused multi story building in the Barbican owned by Berkeley Homes early on Saturday 21st January. The group displayed banners from the upper floor windows and claimed that they would open the house up to visitors on Monday for a lecture on the city’s secret finances and lobbying activities.

Roman House is currently under development and 90 new homes will be created once the project is finished. Berkeley Homes stressed that the building was unsafe and urged the protestors to leave.

In a sudden change of heart the protestors vacated the building of their own accord and Berkeley Homes have moved quickly to secure the building from further intrusion.

Occupy London have recently lost an eviction battle against their occupation of the land surrounding St Paul’s Cathedral and Monday will see the 100th day of their protest at the site.

Justice Lindblom at the Royal Courts of Justice ruled that although they had a right to protest they were blocking a public highway and must leave. A member of the group has already lodged an appeal against the decision.

Roman House was the fifth occupation by protesters, who are seeking full financial transparency from the City of London Corporation.

Last year saw a number of prominent buildings occupied by squatters and potentially the campaign would aim to use this tactic to continue to mount pressure on the City of London Corporation.

Many city landlords of empty dwellings are turning to security companies to ensure that their premises remain safe from unauthorised occupation from squatters by employing residential security teams to guard their assets.

Wednesday the 18th January marked the largest online protest in the history of the Internet.

Many large and small websites had a blackout in protest of the proposed legislation.

This is why there is even more reason to pay attention to the Houses, Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Senates corresponding Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA)

Those that have come out in protest include Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Wikipedia and many others.

Internet users were greeted with the following message from the English language section of Wikipedia during the protest blackout:

“Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge – For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. Right now, the US Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet”.

Those in favour of SOPA include major media companies such as Comcast, News Corp, Disney, Universal Music, and Warner Music etc.

SOPA & PIPA themselves are pretty similar however there is one main difference that is, SOPA includes a provision which makes it illegal to stream unauthorised copyrighted content.

Both of these acts are designed to overcome the issue of foreign-based websites that sell pirate movies, music and other products.

SOPA has been nicknamed the ‘Free Bieber’ provision due to the teenage singer Justin Bieber who became famous after posting videos of himself singing other stars songs on YouTube.

SOPA would allow copyright holders to complain to the US attorney general about a foreign website that is said to be ‘committing or facilitating the commission of criminal violations’ of copyright law. This relates mostly to pirated movies and music.

Websites such as YouTube would be greatly affected and it has been said that they could be potentially shut down if the law was to pass.

It would take just one of its millions of users to be accused of violating one US copyright to enforce a complete shut down of the site. The bill would make illegal the streaming of such content, with a maximum penalty predicted at five years imprisonment.

SOPA would allow the movie industry, via the courts and the US attorney general to send request that internet service providers (ISP’s) and search engine companies shut down access to those accused of copyright and even to prevent any linking to those sites.

This would then mean that a site could not be found again on a search engine. It would also bar Internet advertising providers from making payment to websites previously accused of copyright violations.

These acts were written well intentionally however unfortunately it could cause serious damage to the free flow of information on the Internet. This has in turn caused uproar worldwide.

There are many hoops that this planned legislation will have to jump though for it to be implemented. If both houses of Congress pass the bill it is then passed to President Barack Obama to make the final choice.

Further debate regarding SOPA is apparently set for February with no official date released as yet. PIPA is set for vote by the Senate floor on 24th Jan.

It will be interesting to see if these two Acts are passed and if they do go into force. What impact will it have on our freedom of information via the Internet? Will it lead to closure of some of the biggest Internet search engines?

Twelve former members and 3 friends, aged between 35 and 60, will be retracing the steps of the “Heroes of Telemark”, who undertook one of the most audacious raids of the Second World War and destroyed the German Heavy Water plant at Vermork, which was vital to the Nazis’ attempt to build an atomic bomb.

The original raid was carried out by Norwegian members of the British Special Operations Executive (SOE). The daring raid was the subject of a Hollywood film, The Heroes of Telemark, starring Kirk Douglas.

Covering more than 80km over five days, the team will ski through some of the most challenging mountainous terrain in potentially arctic conditions, following the exact route and sleeping in some of the original huts used by the Norwegian saboteurs in 1943.

The expedition will involve considerable physical effort and prove challenging for all participants. Any donations towards this event would be greatly appreciated, all of which will directly support the work of the SBS Association.

London’s Metropolitan Police detectives are said to have carried out a formal inquiry to discover the facts surrounding an alleged bid to blackmail the eldest daughter of Formula 1 owner Bernie Ecclestone.

Tamara Ecclestone model and no stranger to the spotlight had recently stared in the Channel 5 reality show ‘Billion Dollar Girl’. The series documented her elaborate lifestyle as well as her collection of designer shoes and handbags potentially opening the door to criminals.

Crime is on the increase as the world’s financial crisis starts to bite and many criminals choose to attack key individuals at their homes or whilst conducting their daily routine.

Miss Ecclestone’s 55-room home in Kensington, West London is reported to be worth in the region of £45 million. Her father is estimated to be worth around £2.5 billion, which makes him Britain’s fourth richest man.

Miss Ecclestone contacted police after receiving a letter that allegedly threatened to release personal information about her. Reports claim that the blackmailer threatened to reveal details of a relationship between her and an unidentified male unless she paid a sum of money.

Although the amount of money demanded has not been revealed, it’s alleged to be at least six figures.

Tamara’s father Bernie was brutally mugged outside his F1 Knightsbridge offices last year by a group of thugs making off with his watch and jewelry.

Threats to high profile individuals and their families have prompted the employment of close protection operatives or bodyguards. CPOs have all the skills necessary to create and maintain an environment for clients that is, free from threat, harassment or embarrassment allowing them to conduct their daily routine in a safe manner.

This poses the question; do celebrity reality TV shows expose and target the stars to potential blackmailers, stalkers or criminals in the future?

Last week saw a particularly good week for the multi national Naval Task Forces operating throughout the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean regions conducting NATO’s Operation Shield.

UK’s RFA Fort Victoria prevented MT Liquid Velvet a captured merchant vessel at the hands of Somali pirates being used as a mothership from progressing towards the Arabian Gulf to conduct piracy operations.

MT Liquid Velvet has a crew of 23 on board and was reportedly being used as a mothership earlier in the week by EU NAVFOR. The interdiction took place after Fort Victoria shadowed the mothership during the night and sent their Lynx helicopter to overfly the mothership to demonstrate they meant business.

This act gave the pirates second thoughts and they turned the ship around and headed back towards the Somali coastline being shadowed by Fort Victoria.

The Danish Navy warship Absalon rescued a captured Iranian fishing dhow Tahari with 14 crewmembers on board. 25 pirates were captured during the boarding operation. The captured dhow had been held for two months and crew were glad to be set free without injury.

American warship USS Kidd seized a further Iranian fishing dhow capturing 15 Somali pirates and setting free the crew of 13 Iranian fishermen.

On Thursday Spanish Naval Tanker SPS Patino suffered an attack by Somali pirates in a case of mistaken identity, which proved to be disastrous for the pirates.

SPS Patino was conducting World Food Programme escort duties off the coast of Somalia when a lone pirate skiff approached at speed and opened fire believing the supply ship was a merchant vessel.

The navy crew on watch returned fire at the skiff and launched their helicopter to prevent the skiff evading capture.

The six pirates onboard the fleeing skiff jettisoned their weapons and pirate signature equipment overboard in an attempt to plead their innocence when captured, as they knew the game was up and surrendered.

RFA Fort Victoria had a busy week as shortly after they prevented MT Liquid Velvet from conducting mothership operations when they were called into action once more against a suspicious fishing dhow.

Royal Marine snipers on board a Navy Lynx helicopter fired warning shots towards the dhow, which failed to stop. Marines in rigid inflatable boats moved towards the dhow under cover of the airborne snipers to conduct a boarding and search of the dhow.

The Marines faced no resistance from the dhow and boarded it to find 13 Somali pirates on board with a cache of weapons and ammunition.

A successful week for the Navy however, there is no end in sight as the pirate menace simply grows in different directions as witnessed last year with land based kidnappings of tourists from Kenya’s coastal areas.

British hostage Judith Tebbutt is still held captive inside Somalia since September last year.

It has been reported that Marshall Islands flagged MT Fairchem Bogey has been released by Somali pirates after five months in captivity.

Mumbai based Anglo Eastern Ship Management who refused to comment on any ransom payment used to secure the ships release manages the vessel.

MT Fairchem Bogey has a crew of 21 Indian crewmembers onboard. Their condition is unknown at present. The Indian Navy is escorting the vessel to safety.

The vessel was hijacked on 20th August whilst sitting at anchor off the Port of Salalah, Oman after dropping off its security team.

Reports state a ransom in excess of $7 million has been paid and its not unrealistic to assume that a considerable sum will have been paid as the pirates normally hold out for long periods unless they get what they are asking for.

Adeyemi fell victim of racial abuse from individuals directed from the stands during Oldham’s FA Cup third round tie against Liverpool at Anfield.

20-year-old Adeyemi was reduced to tears in the 80th minute of Oldham’s 5-1 defeat on Friday when an apparent shout was directed at him from the Kop end. Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard tried to calm the player after he was visibly shaken by the incident.

Referee Neil Swarbrick reported the incident to the FA. Neil Swarbrick recently hit the headlines after sending off QPR’s Joey Barton for head butting Norwich City’s Bradley Johnston, which later caused controversy by comments from QPR’s manager Neil Warnock after the game.

Liverpool Football Club was swift to start investigating the incident alongside Merseyside Police. The club had recently come under fierce criticism over the handling of Luis Suarez’s eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra.

It is believed that Adeyemi told police that he was racially abused twice by a supporter. Witnesses also backed this up.

The football club were said to have worked very closely with Merseyside Police to help establish all the facts surrounding the incident. They also handed the police CCTV coverage and photos of the relevant part of the stadium where the alleged incident took place. Liverpool FC released a statement which said it was “deeply sorry” for what had happened.

Match day stewards gave statements and access was granted to all the footage captured by the cameras filming the match at the time.

Adeyemi attended Norwich School formally King Edward VI’s Grammar School one of the oldest schools in the world, with history tracing back to 1096.

He worked his way through Norwich City’s youth structure, finally signing his professional forms for Norwich City at 17 years old. He declined a University offer from Cambridge University in order to pursue his football career.

Norwich City manager Paul Lambert said he spoke to Adeyemi after the game and said he was “okay”. Adeyemi signed on loan for League ones Oldham Athletic on a five-month deal in August 2011.

Oldham released a statement thanking both the police and Liverpool football club for their efforts in investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A 20-year-old man from Aintree was soon arrested and has now been charged with racially aggravated behaviour.

It has now been reported that MP’s are to probe racism in football after these recent high profile race rows. The culture, media and sport select committee confirmed it would look into the issue later this year.
